Zelenskyy accuses US of overlooking Russia’s support for Iran

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused the United States of ignoring evidence that Russia is helping Iran target US positions in the Middle East, arguing that Washington still places too much trust in Vladimir Putin while failing to grasp the Kremlin’s wider ambitions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the United States ignored what he described as compelling evidence that Russia was assisting Iran in attacks on American military positions in the Middle East, because Washington continues to trust Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to The Guardian, Zelenskyy said Russian military satellites photographed key energy infrastructure in Gulf states and Israel, as well as the locations of US military bases across the region, and passed that intelligence to Iran. He said he had raised the matter publicly, but had seen no meaningful American response towards Moscow.

Zelenskyy argued that the absence of a stronger US reaction reflected a deeper problem in Washington’s approach to Moscow. In his view, the White House still believes Putin can be dealt with in good faith, despite repeated evidence to the contrary. He described that trust as misplaced and said it was shaping a broader misunderstanding of Russia’s conduct, both in the Middle East and in Ukraine.

The allegation follows earlier reporting by Reuters, which cited a Ukrainian intelligence assessment claiming that Russia had provided Iran with satellite imagery and cyber support during the recent regional confrontation. Reuters reported that Russian satellites carried out detailed surveys of dozens of sites in multiple countries, with some locations later struck by Iran.

Zelenskyy also criticised the US-led diplomatic track on ending the war in Ukraine. He said President Donald Trump’s team had failed to understand what Russia actually wants, adding that Trump advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had spent too much time with Putin and senior Russian officials while neglecting direct engagement with Kyiv. He noted that US envoys had travelled repeatedly to Moscow without making a corresponding visit to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president further warned that Putin’s objectives go well beyond the Donbas. He said Moscow would not stop if it secured further gains in eastern Ukraine, and suggested that major cities such as Dnipro and Kharkiv remained part of the Kremlin’s wider military ambition. In that sense, Zelenskyy’s remarks were not only about Iran, but about what he sees as Washington’s continued failure to read Putin’s intentions correctly.
